Atlas in Action

Commercial Foundation Services at Stafford Civic Center Stafford Civic Center is a two story auditorium type building in a circular shape with a flat roof. According to the plans supplied by the client, the building was constructed in 1984 as a slab on grade type structure with drilled piers and concrete masonry units (CMU) for the walls. The framing is structural steel and bar joists for the balcony and roof framing.

IIt was our understanding that the foundation distress phenomena has been occurring for a number of years. Visual signs of foundation issues in this case were exterior separations in the CMU blocks at various locations. On the interior there were cracks in the sheetrock in the lobby area and separations in the CMU blocks at the stairways from the balcony level. The columns in the lobby area had shifted as well.

A repair plan was developed based on the structure which encompassed 150 pressed piling on the exterior perimeter and 68 pressed piling on the interior. The interior piling were installed through a maze of tunnels hand dug by Houston Tunneling. The pressed piling used in this endeavor were developed by Atlas under the U.S. Patent # 5,096,333. These pressed pilings reached a reported depth of 22′ to 36′ with a driving force of 10,000 PSI. The purpose of the piling is to mitigate potential future downward movement of the structure. In order to provide a complete and comprehensive repair, polyurethane injections were made under the interior concrete slab for void fill and additional slab support. Once completed all that remains are the cosmetic repairs needed to bring the building back to its original charm and mystic. All cosmetic repairs are the responsibility of the owner (the City of Stafford in this case). The employees of the City of Stafford and the personnel in the day to day operations of the Stafford Civic Center were an absolute delight to work with. We at Atlas thanked those folks as much as they thanked Atlas’s Commercial Foundation Services for a job “Well Done”!
